Generally, TrueCrypt has been the defacto standard for file and folder encryption, for free. However, I have been looking at a new (to me), encryption program called “Kruptos 2?, which solves a problem the mighty TrueCrypt can’t handle: Totally self contained and self decrypting archives!

Very stable, can encrypt multiple files. Have been using it for over 2 years now. They have superb customer service, one use to be that you could not open two of a same kind of files, without first having to close one, before decrypting another, this issue has been resolved. Extremely stable, file encryption software, i have tried just about everything out there to find one reliable enough to use for our business and personal use. I was easily able to encrypt, decrypt files, videos, etc. and even store them onto CD and flash drive. I wasn't able to "fool it" by opening anything using the wrong password either. AND I could use a DIFFERENT PASSWORD EACH TIME ON EVERY ITEM I ENCRYPTED. Very versitle too, I was able to decide if I wanted to just open an item and NOT decrypt it again or visa versa. Very good program. You can also make something into a self-extracting self with the file extension .exe thought it doesn't have to be a "program" at all (hahaha). Very slick. Integrates well with windows file explorer, all i have to do is right click the file or folder for easy encryption and decryption. it's exactly what i was looking for, just to keep kids and nosey people from "accidentally" opening my files. I love the speed, and really has no limitation on the number and size of files. I tested it on one of my photo albums and encrypted over 900+ photos quickly error free. It doesn't hide the files/folders, or create another virtual drive, or delete the original file, or self destructs with the wrong password (which to me is overkill for my purposes). Five stars for this program easy. It is very rare that I run into a program like this one--a program that I like almost everything about it. If you are looking for a program to encrypt/decrypt files, I?d start with this one because I doubt that you?ll look any further after this. Complexities are handled by software; user interface is kept simple. Files can be encrypted one at a time or in batches. If you desire to encrypt multiple files, you can place them all in one folder and the software will encrypt every file in that folder, including all subfolders. Encryption does not take up any extra hard drive space. The file name and its extension are changed so it cannot be known what the original file was (It is not known whether the original file was a Word document or a jpg photo, etc.). The folder names are kept the same. A nice feature is the ability to make self-extracting files. You can send an encrypted file to someone who does not have this software and they, if they have the password, can extract/decrypt the file themselves. Another feature is the ability to securely erase sensitive files from your computer. Computer savvy people know that when you erase a file it is not actually erased, only the name in the FAT table of the hard drive is changed. A utility program, such as Norton Utilities, can "undelete" these files. This software actually deletes and overwrites the file many times. No process known to man can recover such a deleted file as its magnetic signature on the hard drive simply no longer exists. I believe I saw an Options listed in the program menu which I think can allow you to customize how the program operates, but I?m not sure. Learning curve: Almost none. I started working with this software almost immediately. The program comes with a help file but I looked at it only out of curiosity and it is extremely well written. Installation: Quick and easy. No problems. No reboot is necessary. Reliability: Perfect. Not a single problem encountered. No freezes. No glitches. Speed: Very fast.
